Jennifer Keeney- Flutist

🎶 Meet Jennifer Keeney: The Creative Flutist
Hello! I'm Jennifer, and my whole approach to music and the flute truly reflects my joyful, creative, and dynamic approach to teaching and playing. I believe music is meant to be shared, and my greatest joy is helping you discover the ease and freedom in your own heart, body and mind as you play.
My Journey in Performance
My career has allowed me to collaborate with a variety of Classical, Jazz, Pop, and World Musicians. I’ve had the privilege of serving as Principal Flute of The Hong Kong Philharmonic, played Flute and Piccolo in the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, and was a member of The New World Symphony. I’ve also performed with incredible groups like the Detroit Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, and Houston Grand Opera, Central City Opera among others. I also loved collaborating in many chamber groups such as: Trio Angelico, Sound Bridge and Trio Melange.
Mentoring the Next Generation
For decades, I've dedicated myself to teaching. I teach right here in Austin at Creative Flutist Studio and in the Round Rock ISD, and I also travel to give classes and workshops. I was honored to be the Affiliate Artist of Flute at the University of Houston, Moores School of Music for 9 years. I also teach at prestigious summer programs, serving on the flute faculty for The Panoramic Flutist, Interlochen National Music Camp, The University of Texas at Austin's Longhorn Honors Camp, Floot Fire, Baylor University Flute Seminar and Texas Tech University.
For 25 years I have been giving my Creative Flutist Summer Master Classes that cultivate the next Texas All - State Flutists!
I am known for my extraordinary teaching and guidance in preparing students for their auditions, competitions, and entrance into conservatories and schools of music.
-
Student Success: My students are Texas All-State Flutists every year and win major competitions, including the National Flute Association, From The Top, Donna Marie Haire, Austin and Houston Flute Artist Competitions and many Concerto Competitions.
-
Top Placements: I’m so proud that my students have been accepted at many of the finest music schools and universities, such as: The Juilliard School of Music, Eastman School of Music, Curtis School of Music, Rice University, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Colorado Boulder, University of Texas Austin, Northwestern University and many other fine Universities.
Creative Coaching: Freedom in Your Music
I also offer my specialized Creative Coaching sessions to all advanced and professional musicians. This is where we focus on transforming your practice, auditioning, and performing. Drawing on all of my professional performing, orchestral and teaching experiences as well as my other training—I’m a certified Yoga Teacher and completed 3 years of training as an Alexander Technique Teacher—we work together to bring ease and freedom for your heart, spirit, body and mind.
You can join me for these private sessions weekly, monthly (in person and online), or in group classes throughout the year.
Resources & Philosophy
I’ve put my philosophy down on paper (and screens!) in several books, including Creative Practice Ideas and Exercises for the Whole Musician (available as an e-book and in hard cover) and The Creative Flutist Series.
My education comes from wonderful institutions like The University of Michigan, Royal Northern College of Music in England, University of Southern California and Rice University. I am grateful to all my teachers, especially my principal teachers: Clemente Barone, Judith Bentley, Trevor Wye, Leone Buyse, Jeanne Baxtresser, and Jim Walker.
Life Outside the Studio
In my free time, I really enjoy being in nature, reading, writing, yoga, traveling, crafting and cooking. I adore my nieces and nephews and am so lucky to have 2 wonderful sisters!
